Mahmoud - a 35-year-old Syrian man - was crossing the border between Turkey and Bulgaria in mid-December 2023, together with his sister, Yasmine. At one point, near the village of Valcha Polyana, they were abandoned by the group they were travelling with. On 16 December 2023, an alert was received by our team in Bulgaria, which immediately went out to search the area, and at the same time alerted 112. Unfortunately, we found no response. Requests made to the border police had not been answered. On 6 January, the body of his sister Yasmine was found, and buried in Yambol, but there is no further news of Mahmoud.
